What we do

The activities listed below are planned events that occur each year on a regular bases. In additions to these, there are things that pop up during the year that are additional fun times.  Many of the Toronto Sons of Beaches activities are listed on the website's Calendar of events, showing times, location and specific dates. This paper is an overview of the following Sob activities.

Tournament games

Fund raiser event

Florida travel games

Labour Day Social

Practise games

League play

Golf tournaments

Annual and quarterly meetings and how to meet members.

I see our man Hank is here again with his green hat on this time. This means he is envious of all the fun events I am about to outline here for you. Hank is looking pretty good himself right now; he has been travelling a lot lately. Notice how his Florida tan contrasts that green hat. I bet you can’t guess his age.

Meet members:  Joining in on any activities will help you to become familiar with the group, but a quick start is to attend the Tues. night free practice and bar social. This is a good place to meet members, tune up your swing and introduce your friends to the Sob. Everyone is welcome and we have a note on this below.  Another way to get acquainted is to review the Member ID web page. This tool is a photo ID page of each member and their spouse. It gives a little bio-sketch on each fellow and if a picture really isn't worth a 1,000 words, it sure will help you put a name to the face. - AND - if your photo isn't in there - contact the webmaster.

SoB - Tournaments run a minimum of once a month, but 3 or 4 times is not unusual

May to Nov. We have 4 team age groups (50, 55, 60, 70) and strive to pick tournaments where more than one team can attend. This is not always possible, but when available, it enhances the Beaches’ Social vehicle. Some of our players play in more than one age division and some members play in tournaments other than the Beaches’ event. So, there is lot of ball around all year. Just hang out with these guys and it will happen.

Hopefully, we will have these tourneys picked out early in the spring to allow you to plan your year. The kicker is in the +60 group. These fellows often have spontaneous 1-day (sometimes midweek) tournaments throughout the summer. This may or may not work for you.

The team organizers are always looking for help. If you assist in organising a team there are some game tips for review on the website:    Slo-pitch batting line up     When to be home or Visitors    Difference between Senior league & SPN tournaments    Round Robin Schedules

Goodlad Fund Raising Tournament - (Map & directions)

In addition to the above monthly tournaments there is one more you should positively plan for – it is our very own 1-day August Beaches’ hosted tournament. This is a fund raiser for our club and benefits all members directly or indirectly. The “Sons of Beaches®” club gives its members a lot (much more than the value of the fee) and a good philosophy to hold would be to attempt to give 10% back each year. This is your chance! Act as a volunteer staff.

This may involve making sandwiches, working the bar, setting up, raking the diamond or cleaning up after the event. You may be called on to play on a team or umpire. Of course all this depends on your abilities. We are not going to ask you to do something stressful or take you beyond your limits. It is just another Fun day in the life of a Beaches member. Don’t miss this next tournament and contact the SoB Vice President (Craig Williamson) for details or to help out. Flyer for teams.

 Labour Fun Day Social

This annual “Fun Day” event was held at the Buckingham’s home for 20 year. Bob and Vera retired as host at the end of 2004. The new location will be announced each season and in 2005 this was held at the Seagrave Park. It is a one-day softball double header – Beach against Beach. Following the softball games we head over to a host home for some lawn games and share in potluck luncheon. Florida Games

The one tournament that may need some extended planning on your part is: our annual November Florida Tournament and exhibition games. Not everyone can afford this trip, but if you can get the money – just do it! This is a great time for you to get acquainted with our Florida Branch and get a much better feel for the “Sons of Beaches family group. The Beaches have a free CD available for the asking that has many recent Florida pictures on it. Some of these photos are on this website. For a Complete Florida directory and next trip date http://sonsofbeaches.net/Florida/FloridaDirectory.htm

The actual "Half Century tournament" is on the weekend and we play exhibitions games during the week, mostly against/arranged by our Florida Beaches group. (back to top of page)

League Opportunities

In addition to weekend tournaments the Sons of Beaches has a competitive team in a Sunday morning League and many members also play mornings during the week in the Scarborough Senior house league. Both of these groups are +55 teams and play at L'Amoreaux Park in the Finch and Birchmount Ave. area.  If you want to play Sundays speak with Don Abram. That group is limited to 15 players only. (Sunday Schedule)    (Day League Schedule)

Free Practise Games

Tues. nights – 6:00 to 7:30 we have a free practise/games at Tam O’Shanter Park (Sheppard & Birchmount Ave). Anyone can come here and play during that time so bring a friend and meet some Beaches people. Following these practices we meet around 8-PM and are joined by other members at our sponsor's bar for more socializing and a keep in touch exchange. However, the 2nd Tues on each month is more focused.

On the 2nd Tues. of each month we have an exhibition game for the SoBs against a local team. Both teams gather back at the bar and we usually have free finger foods at this time to add to the evening's pleasure. Also, a more structured information exchange often takes place amongst executive members as most attend at this time of the month.
